Eight things I’ve Done that Maybe You All Have or Have not Done
1. Written and published an entire book about dogs from the point of view of a dog. (Also written and published an entire book about cats, but that one is currently out of print, though you can still get it used, and I’m working on getting the rights back so I can actually sell it to people who still want it.)
2. Had a loaded .357 pointed at my head (best friend didn’t know it was loaded), only to be then pointed at the wall where he shot a hole through his entire house.
3. Met Kurt Vonnegut.
4. Been inside “The Red Zone” during a volcanic eruption (Mt. St. Helens, May 18, 1980).
5. While on book tour, had to pull off the freeway in Wallace, ID when I heard the news that Betty White (yes that Betty White) liked my book so much that she called my agent to request a copy to give to her friend Bill Dana for his birthday, then sat and openly wept for a solid ten minutes (might have been longer) while parked in a grocery store parking lot.
6. Survived the stillbirth of my third child, Grace Susie Bain.
7. During Jr. High and High School lived in Mineral, Washington, population 500 (though this was a public lie… there is no way the town held any more than 300 actual humans).
8. Witnessed the birth of my 4th child in the rearview mirror of my car (a Saturn Wagon) while driving said car, then driving back home after arriving at the hospital and telling them we didn’t actually need them anymore because, well, look… here he is, and all you’ll do at this hospital is poke him with sharp objects and forget that.
